How to set up Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (DEP) in the Endpoint Manager

Introduction

  • Apple company has implemented Device enrollment program (DEP) to easily manage corporate devices purchased from Apple such as iPad and iPhone devices, Mac computers, and Apple TV.
     
  • As the Endpoint Manager integrated with DEP program, you apple devices can be automatically synced with us. This completely avoids manually enrolling and configuring the devices. Besides automating the enrollment process, DEP allows a higher level of device supervision. 
     
  • Please note that currently, Endpoint Manager integration supports only iOS devices.

Prerequisite:

Process in brief: 

  • Go to Endpoint Manager→ Settings→ Apple DEP → Click 'Start'.
     
  • Enter DEP enrollment details according to your business registration. So that Enroll Apple Device Enrollment program Certificate will be successfully installed. 
     
  • Assign a profile, Unassign a profile, Sync devices from Apple DEP → Devices
     
  • Go to Apple DEP→ Profiles to create profile and manage the device management settings  
     
  • Configure admin notification settings from Apple DEP → Settings → Select 'Send Notifications'

Process in detail

  • Go to 'Settings'→ 'Apple DEP'


     
  • Click 'Start' button to enroll Apple Device Enrollment certificate.
     
  • Enter DEP enrollment details according to your business registration.
     
    • Select Country name
       
    • Apple ID
       
    • State or Province Name
       
    • Locality Name
       
    • Organization Name
       
    • Organization Unit
       
    • Common name 

 

  • Once DEP enrollment certificate is installed successfully with Endpoint Manager, then the details will be shown as below,



     
  • Go to Apple DEP → Devices. You can see DEP registered devices automatically sync with Endpoint Manager. You can assign a profile, Unassign a profile, Sync with DEP data and update global information from the device interface. 



     

    Assign Profile 

    You can assign a profile to a device so that it can be allowed pairing, supervision and skipping the setup items such as configuring Apple ID, IMessage and Face Time. 

  • Select a device → Click ' Assign Profile'
     
  • Choose a profile from the list to assign it a device 
     
  • Click 'Assign' to complete. 



     

'Device assigned successfully' message will be displayed once a profile is assigned.




 

Unassign Profile 

  • You can remove the applied DEP profile anytime from the device. This will helps you to assign a different profile or revert the applied settings. 

  • Select a device → Click 'Unassign Profile'


Sync with DEP settings for selected devices 

  • You can update DEP sync for the selected devices from Endpoint Manager 

  • Select a device → Click 'Sync with DEP (only Selected)'  to update DEP sync for the device. 


Update info (Global) 

  • You can update  DEP sync for all the devices from Endpoint Manager 

Click 'Update info(Global)' button to update global devices




 

Add Profile 

Admin can create DEP profile to manage the device management settings and specify the setup items to be skipped. While the former allows you to customize supervision settings, later allows you to quickly complete enrollment without setup hassle. 

  • Go to Apple DEP→ Profiles→ Click 'Add profile' 
     
  • Type the name of the profile. For example, 'iOS AEP profile' 
     
  • Click 'Add' to proceed' 


     
  • Click the 'Settings' tab 
     
  • Specify DEP device management settings 
     
    • Allow pairing
       
    • Is supervised
       
    • Is multiuser
       
    • Is mandatory
       
    • Department
       
    • Support email address
       
    • support phone number
       
    • Await device configured
       
    • Is MDM removable
       
    • Do Not Ask User Credentials
       
  • Click 'Save' to finalize 'Settings' tab. 
  • Note: If the option 'Do Not Ask User Credentials' is checked, Apple DEP integrated device can be configured without entering user credentials and device will be enrolled with the selected user as a device owner. If this option is unchecked, user credentials will be asked upon Apple DEP integrated device configuration. User has to be defined on Endpoint Manager or on Active Directory(if configured)


     

  • Click the 'Skip Setup Items' tab 
     
  • Specify DEP device set up to be skipped. 
     

Click 'Save' to finalize 'Skip Setup Items' 



 

Publish Profile

The profile is published on the DEP portal, and once a profile is published to Apple DEP Portal, it can not be modified or deleted from Endpoint Manager due to Apple DEP limitations.

But the customer is able to clone a published profile, change anything, and publish the cloned profile to DEP

Publishing profile can be used by other users in then Endpoint Manager.

  • Click 'Publish Profile'
     

'Profile successfully published' message will be displayed once the profile is published. 



 

Configure notification settings

Go to Apple DEP → Settings → Select 'Send Notifications'

If selected, admin users are able to receive DEP notifications on the following scenarios viz, 

  • DEP profile is published from Endpoint Manager
     
  • DEP profile is assigned/de-assigned
     
  • Device enrollment/un-enrollment is complete
